GCSE Music

Music is an exciting, creative, challenging and versatile subject: one which universities and employers regard highly. Studying music supports holistic cognitive development and therefore drives academic achievement. It is unique in being both a creative and academic subject

Students who have a passion for performing and composing will thrive on this course! The specification allow students to be creative whilst learning about a range of musical styles and genres and developing the solo and ensemble skills required to excel in their performances. 

The course suits musicians of all instrumental styles, from rock guitarists to classical pianists, pop vocalists to drummers. The performance element can be tailored to each individual, as can the compositions. To gain top band marks in performance students will need to be working towards approximately Grade 4 standard on their particular instrument/voice. If you have a passion for music you will love this course.

Component 1: Understanding Music (Written exam) 

40% of the qualification

Component 2: Performing Music 

30% of the qualification 

This component is marked by your teacher and then externally moderated 

Component 3: Composing Music 

30% of the qualification 

This component is marked by your teacher and then externally moderated 

The course will enable you: to become an accomplished performer; to compose interesting music using compositional tools; to analyse and appraise a range of musical styles and genres and to perform as part of an ensemble. You will also gain valuable social skills and gain confidence throughout the course.
