Links with Local Employers

We fully value the impact of having firm links with local employers.

We believe that by having meaningful encounters with employers, students benefit from increased employability skills and ultimately become more employable.

Our aim if for all students to have a meaningful encounter with an employer in every year group from year 7-13.

We have one week’s calendared work experience in Year 10 and in Year 12.

We also encourage all Sixth Form students to participate in work experience and support them using curriculum time to do so.

All Year 11 students have a Mock Interview with a local employer.

All students from Years 7-11 have an Employability passport in their planner where they record evidence of meeting the ten employability goals.

Embedding Careers in the Curriculum

We took part in a project in the year 2017/18 where we made links with local employers across six curriculum areas. The aim of this was to make the work that was covered in class more meaningful by linking it to a real work place situation.

The projects that were completed were:

Y7 Science -  United Cast Bar

Students wrote and delivered a presentation about Oxidation. The winning groups were invited to United Cast Bar and had lunch in the Board Room and a tour of the Foundry.

Y8 Art - Eastern Moors Partnership

Students were given a list of local birds (from the Peaks) to paint.  The students work was then displayed at National Trust centres such as Long Cliff Cafe and on Eastern Moor’s website.

Y10 English - S41 Radio

Students wrote and presented a spoken presentation about an aspect of Chesterfield. The winning presentations were broadcast on S41 radio.

Y10 Business Studies - D2N2

Students had to give a business leader advice on how to improve their business plan.

Y13 PE -   Physiotherapist

Students were given a real life case study of a patient and had to present how they would have treated the patient.

Y13 Health and Social Care -   Chatsworth Road Surgery

Students designed the slides for the surgery waiting room screens about healthy living.

The evaluations of the project showed great impact from both the student’s access to learning and retention but also an increase in their interest of the topic because ‘they could see how it fitted to the real world’.

For more information about the projects, please view the showcase video.

We aim to run the projects again in the year 2018/19 whilst adding more curriculum areas to the program.

How you can help us

We are always looking to increase our bank of local employers. If you are a business or know of a business (no matter how large or small) and you think you could help us, we would love to hear from you. You may be able to help us with:

  • Mock Interviews
  • Work Experience Placements
  • Work Shadowing Days
  • Linking with a curriculum area to bring learning to life

We are also happy to consider any other suggestions you may have.
