T Levels

Tech Levels are full time courses at college offering level 3 qualifications for students aged 16 plus which develop specialist knowledge and skills to help get an apprenticeship or job, for example in engineering, IT, accounting or professional cookery, or to progress to a higher level qualification.

Reason for Change

Young people wishing to pursue technical education and adults seeking to retrain face a bewildering choice, with over 13,000 qualifications currently available for 16–18 year-olds.    There is a lack of clear progression routes to employment.

Careers education and guidance provides insufficient information and support for those wishing to access technical training for skilled employment.  Many employers do not understand the system, in particular what knowledge and skills they can expect from a person with a particular qualification.

T Level programmes will, on average,   consist of 1800 hours over two years. They will follow the same broad framework and will consist of five components:

  1. A technical qualification.
  2. A work placement with an employer (minimum 45 days).
  3. Maths, English and digital requirements.
  4. Any other occupation-specific requirements/qualifications (e.g. a license to practise).
  5. Any further employability, enrichment and pastoral provision.
